i 'm now studying the oracle DBA course, as am new, i hardly to understand something.
the reason why i asked this question is right now i want to configure the RMAN to do the backup, the book suggest to have recovery catalog stored in different database from the target database, so the question is do i have to set up an other database on the same server? or if it is a repository, how can i initially configure it?

You want to have your RMAN repository/catalog in a seperate database and a seperate server. The reason for this is recovery. If you have them on the same disks/server and you have a failure you will not be able to restore your DB cause both will be down.
